Look for stamps
Real gold is usually stamped with a karat mark such as 10K, 14K, 18K, or 750. Stamps can be faked, so they are only a starting point.
Magnet test
Gold is not magnetic. If your jewelry sticks strongly to a magnet, it is likely plated or made of another metal. Some clasps contain steel, so test the main body of the piece.
